How We Grew Our HubSpot Academy Instagram Conversions by 475% for Only $6 per Month

Instagram allows brands to reach a massive global and engaged audience, humanize their content, showcase their products or services, and inspire their fans. Over one billion people use the app monthly, and more than half log in daily. The facts are there: Instagram can be a key driver to business growth. I’m on the HubSpot Academy Team at HubSpot, and not only have we read up on the facts, but we also teach them. Last January, we launched a new course on Instagram Marketing, where we brought together internal and industry experts to teach 10,000+ businesses how to develop an end-to-end Instagram marketing strategy for their businesses. So, we’ve done the research and we have the internal expertise — there was just one problem: We weren’t practicing what we taught. Our HubSpot Academy Instagram had been laying dormant for months and didn’t have a clear strategy or owner. We knew that we owed it to our community and to ourselves to fix this. Why Instagram? Despite its growing popularity, we know Instagram isn’t for every[…]

Why We Removed 3,000 Pieces of Outdated Content From the HubSpot Blog

You know what sounds like a really bad idea? Deleting 3,000 pages from the HubSpot Blog. You know what our SEO and Web Dev teams did in February? Deleted 3,000 pages from the HubSpot Blog. No, this wasn’t some Marie Kondo-ing team-bonding exercise gone horribly, horribly wrong (although those posts were definitely not sparking joy). It was a project that our head of technical SEO, Victor Pan, and I had wanted to run for a long time — because counterintuitively, getting rid of content on your site can actually be fantastic for SEO. In the SEO world, this practice is called “content pruning”. But, while a good idea in theory, content pruning doesn’t mean you should go crazy and hack away at your content like it’s a tree and you’ve got a chainsaw. Content pruning is far more methodical than that — like trimming a bonsai. I’ll get to the results we saw at the end of this post. But first, let’s explore what content pruning is, and then dive into a step-by-step content audit[…]

How We Octupled Image Search Traffic to the HubSpot Blog in 1 Year

Cliché: A picture is worth a thousand words. Fact: HubSpot’s pictures are worth 120 thousand clicks. Last year, my colleague Karla Cook gave our readers a 3,000-word peek behind the curtain into a new SEO strategy we implemented at the beginning of 2018. That strategy, which was designed to fix a traffic plateau across the blog, increased our organic traffic by 25% year over year — to eight million organic pageviews per month. This is about three million new organic views we didn’t have at the beginning of 2018. Where that traffic is coming from is equally exciting. As I said, our new SEO strategy launched our organic blog traffic to heights it had never been to before. But that strategy had another, somewhat unintended consequence for us. While we increased our total organic traffic by 25% from last year, we increased our image search traffic by … wait for it … 779%. This refers to traffic that comes from people who conduct a search in Google, or a similar search engine, and click on[…]

5 Essential SEO Tips That Have Helped HubSpot Become an Organic Powerhouse

Throughout all of 2017, HubSpot experienced something that had never happened before — our blog’s monthly traffic flattened. Even worse, it started to decline. So after months of stressing over the mysterious cause of our blog’s traffic plateau, we decided to sit down, chug a bunch of coffee, and find the culprit. What we discovered is that our editorial strategy of brainstorming topics and relying on our intuition to determine our audience’s content preferences didn’t suffice anymore. And coupled with almost every social media platforms’ unwillingness to direct users off their website and the ever-growing mountain of emails piling up in people’s inboxes, we decided to pivot and focus our energies on the channel that has consistently generated the majority of our blog’s traffic for its entire existence — organic search. Today, almost a year after we implemented our organic-only strategy, we’ve exceeded the majority of our monthly traffic goals and even broke some monthly traffic records. Needless to say, we’re thrilled (and relieved) that our new organic-only strategy fueled our traffic boost and shattered the great traffic plateau[…]
